The Sixteen Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (Sixteen Days) is commemorated every year from 25th November to 10th December. This period is a collection of unique days which are comprised of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25th November, World AIDS Day on 1st December, International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3rd December, and Human Rights Day on 10th December. Every year, NGOCC joins the rest of the nation and indeed the World, to observe this very important period, especially for women and girls.
As an organization, NGOCC utilizes Sixteen Days to heighten awareness-raising activities on Gender-Based Violence (GBV). This is also a time when the organization introspects the various interventions employed to curb the vice both within and outside the organization. Internal reflections are held to audit the strategies the organization has employed over the years and gauge their effectiveness in the current operating context. NGOCC also collaborates with the government and other stakeholders to ensure concerted efforts toward mitigating and ultimately, stopping GBV.
The 2024 Sixteen Days will be commemorated under the theme: “Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls.” This theme does not only call for unity against GBV in the present but calls on all stakeholders to reflect on the gains made, opportunities created and areas of improvement in the 12 critical areas of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA) as it turns 30 next year, in 2025. The BPfA specifically identifies Eliminating Violence against Women and Girls as one critical area that calls on all and sundry, to put in sustainable strategies to safeguard women and girls against any form of violence.
