Speaking at the launch of the “Public campaign against Gender Based Violence” under the theme “Protect childhood, report abuse”in Lusaka’s Kanyama township, Ms Katebe said that there is need to create platforms in communities were women and girls can speak out and where survivors feel supported to break the silence without fear of stigma.
Ms Katebe said GBV can not be curbed if the public is not sensitized about its impact, what it is and where victims can find help.
”To meaningfully combat GBV, we must enhance knowledge, strengthen collaboration, advocate for stronger policies and foster a culture of respect, equality and accountability”, she said.
And Ms Katebe said the continued increase of GBV cases indicates that the traditional strategies of curbing the vice have not yielded the intend results, hence the need to be innovative by introducing community driven and evident based solutions.
And Ms Katebe also said that there is need for integration of GBV prevetion in the school curriculum as it is important in equipping children with information that will help them recognize, resist and report abuse at an early age.
”If we are to protect childhood as this campaign urges us, we must start with education “
”Everyone has a role to play in building a Zambia where every child is protected and every woman is respected”, she said.
Ms Katebe said since the establishment of NGOCC in 1985, it has worked tirelessly to promote gender equality and has since grown to become the leading voice for all women in the country.
”Over the decades, we have consistently advocated for reforms of laws, policies and societal practices that disadvantage women and girls”,
”We have worked hand in hand with CSOs, the church , traditional leaders, government institutions and other cooperating partners in championing gender equality”, Ms Katebe said.
She commended the Zambia Police Service for its timely initiative following the surge in the number of GBV cases in the country.
Meanwhile, Police Inspector General Graphael Musamba says the campaign aims at ensuring that every child is protected and free from any form of harm.
And Gen Musamba commended NGOCC for it’s unwavering partnership with the Zambia Police Service in curbing GBV through its community engagement, survival, advocacy and gender responsive programs.
And speaking at the same event, Gender Division Permanent Secretary Mainga Kabika said the campaign will play a vital role in awareness raising, break silence, encourage victims to speak out and survivors to seek support, and communities to take action.
Ms Kabika said GBV should not be treated as private matter or a cultural norm rather a violation of human rights hence the need to speak against it.
She has since called on all community members, CSOs , traditional leaders and the general public at large to take the front role in combating #GBV.
