‘Women now breaking the culture of silence’

Nongovernmental Gender Organisations Coordinating Council (NGOCC) Chairperson, Grace M. Sinkamba says the increased numbers of the reported cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) by the Zambia Police Victim support is an indication that women and now breaking the culture of silence.
Speaking when the women’s movement visited Chisankane Rural Health Centre in Kafue district as part of the women’s week commemoration on Monday, Ms. Sinkamba said the advocacy and awareness raising on the adverse effects of GBV were beginning to bear fruit.
“We are now beginning to break the culture of silence. For me the high numbers being reported indicate that women are now breaking the silence,” she said.
Ms. Manyonga however bemoaned the increased cases of gender based violence as was reported by the Zambia police every quarter.
She said GBV was perpetrating inequality against women and girls and was negatively impacting against women’s effective participation in the governance of the country.
The NGOCC Board Chairperson challenged women’s organisations to continue to sensitise members of the public about the negative impact of gender based violence on society.
She said the women’s movement had implemented the year long campaign against GBV in 2023 because of the negative impacts of GBV.
“Beyond the campaign we must continue to advocate for stiffer punishment against perpetrators of GBV,”
NGOCC Executive Director, Anne Mbewe Anamela said NGOCC is ready to work with the community in Shantumbu area to curb incidences of GBV.
During the visit, NGOCC and Kingdom Investment donated an assortment of groceries including washing detergents, dippers, sanitary towels and cleaning liquids.
