In October 2000, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) passed the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) on Women, Peace and Security, recognizing the importance of women’s full, equal and meaningful participation in conflict resolution and the need for increased women’s participation in peacemaking and decision-making at all levels in peace processes.
Member States, including from within Africa, have been developing National Action Plans (NAPS) on UNSCR 1325 as a means of realizing the commitments within this landmark resolution. 34 countries in Africa have developed NAPs and Zambia is currently in the process of developing its first NAP with support from the United Nations.
October being the Women Peace and Security (WPS) month, 13 nations gathered in Nairobi, Kenya on 2nd and 3rd October 2024 to commemorate 24 years of the UNSCR 1325 under the theme “Fostering Peace and Inclusivity in East and Southern Africa: Effective Strategies for Advancing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda”.
The occasion was graced by the Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Musalis Mudavadi and the Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, Arts and Heritage Hon. Aisha Jumwa.
During the momentous occasion, with support from the UN Women, Zambia was represented by Ms. Bibian Chinyama, the Gender Principal Officer from the Gender Division – GD and Ms. Ireen Mukete, the NGOCC Programmes Manager.
