In 2021, the Climate Investment Fund (CIF), an enabler of pioneering climate-smart planning and climate action in low and middle-income countries introduced a new program called the Nature, People and Climate (NPC) Investment Program. The Nature, People and Climate (NPC) Investment Program aims to tackle the multiple drivers and impacts of climate change, resulting from human activities on land resources and ecosystem services, in an integrated manner.
The broader aim is to look for nature-based solutions that can be transformative and undertaken at scale enough to transform the lives of women, persons with disabilities, the aged, the youth and other vulnerable groups.
In June 2022, CIF, through the Global Action Climate Committee invited Countries to submit Expressions of Interest (EoIs). In August 2022, Zambia, through the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment – Zambia submitted its EoI and was selected, following a very competitive process. The other Countries selected were Brazil, Ethiopia, Namibia and Rwanda.
Zambia is now receiving support for the preparation of the Nature, People, and Climate (NPC) Investment Plan. Therefore a report has since been developed on diagnostics and gap analyses, which will feed into the NPC Investment Plan.
This project will be implemented in three Provinces namely: Central, Copperbelt and North Western.
NGOCC was privileged to be part of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) that the Ministry engaged today, for the validation of the diagnostics and gaps analyses that has been developed.
While the whole report is progressive, our particular interests are the barriers that have been identified, that hinder women’s resilience to climate shocks among them, the lack of implementation of existing legislation, Gender Based Violence, stereotypes, negative traditional practices, inadequate of productive resources as well as credit among others.
We are hopeful that through this project, an enabling environment will be created to transform the lives of women and many other vulnerable groups against the impacts of climate change.
