NGOCC Engages Media on Gender Responsive Budgeting

The Non-governmental Gender Organizations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has continued engaging the Media under the “Beyond the Numbers: Making the Budget Work for the People” project.
This is in recognition of the role media plays in informing and educating the public on the budget processes.
The project aims to promote greater accountability and better public service delivery through increased capacity and engagement of citizens and civil society in formulating, implementing, and overseeing Zambia’s national budget.
Speaking during the engagement with the media last week, NGOCC Executive Director, Anne Mbewe-Anamela implored the media to bring out the differentiated impacts of the national budget on women, girls, and boys.
She encouraged journalists to take an interest in reporting on areas that impact negatively on women and girls and continue to be underfunded.
Ms. Anamela challenged the media to promote greater accountability and better public service delivery from duty bearers, by consistently highlighting grey areas in the national budget.
She cited the need for more maternity wings to reduce mortality rates and ensure dignified motherhood.
She also reminded journalists not to end at reporting but to ensure they followed up on pronouncements and various commitments by the government until their logical conclusion.
Oxfam In Zambia in Southern Africa (Zambia Country Office), with the Zambia Council For Social Development – ZCSD and the Non-governmental Gender Organizations Coordinating Council (NGOCC), with support from the European Union (EU), are co-implementing a project to strengthen citizen engagement in the formulation and oversight processes of the National Budget. The four-year project is based on a background of poor service delivery and the lack of social accountability systems to hold duty bearers accountable for Public Resource Management, perpetuated by a low level of public awareness. and inclusion in critical budget formulation and oversight processes.
